The expansive valley offers hikers the opportunity to discover the fauna and flora of this unspoilt piece of nature on well-marked hiking trails. The Metnitz Recreation Area also offers art-lovers numerous attractions. The market town of Metnitz was already settled in the 9th century and is home to the holy “St. Leonard” parish church (1121).
Of special interest to art-lovers is the eight-sided ossuary with the death dance frescos painted around 1500, which decorated the ossuary until 1968 and have since been housed in an exhibition house following their conservation by the Austrian Federal Monument Department.
