Speed skating has been practised in the Netherlands for over 230 years as a mode of local transport and as a type of sport. At the end of the 19th century, a 200 km-long route through eleven cities was developed into the “supreme discipline”. The agreement with Austria’s southernmost province was recently extended to 100 years. Nearly 6,000 athletes ensure fully booked hotels and a folk festival atmosphere, ice master Norbert Jank the perfect conditions on the normally quiet Weissensee.
